1. Objective Level
The session offers vital learning on the relationship between religious and social movements by focusing on the Arab Spring and the surprises that it brought. The Arab Spring and its outcomes happened and spread fast beyond the expectations of many, including its protagonists (Bayat, 2013). The session does not just discuss the how and why the revolutions occurred or came to fruition but their attributes that include ideological orientations and political trajectories. It is clear that the Arab Spring affected how people viewed their social lives in relation to their religious perspective. In fact, I feel that the Arab Spring demonstrated that the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region wanted new social ideological orientation and political trajectory in each nation, especially in the Algerian context.
2. Interpretive Level
The Week 2 session is relevant to my knowledge, experience, attitude and context since it demonstrates that the protagonists of the Arab Spring created a social movement devoid of Arab Islamist approaches to social issues that were affecting them. What surprised many is that the Arab Spring sought to establish a new socio-economic and political order by doing away with aristocracies, political control of key public institutions and the existence of a “regime class” who do not consider the interests of the masses (Roy, 2012). These masses sought to create new post-Islamist orientation in the management of public affairs. For instance, in Algeria religious parties lost elections to secular and liberalist parties after the uprising. Majority believe that the Arab Spring strengthened democracy, and enhanced equality and economic prosperity. I believe that the Arab Spring demonstrated that the masses wanted new ideological orientation and establishment of governments that respects the rule of law. The Arab Spring was different from the Islamic Revolutions before that sought to promote the Islamic ideologies, some bordering on extremism (Roy, 2013). I might apply what I have learned in the lesson to understanding the essence of associations in Algeria and emphasize that they create bigger entities that will seek government to enhance democracy, equity and equality.
