The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is mandated to protect the United States. It gathers the knowledge of imminent threats, trains, and prepares agencies to respond to emergencies. To achieve this, it has several components: operation components, supporting components, and office of the secretary (DHS Strategic Plan, 2020). These components comprise several agencies and offices that support each other in several missions to achieve a common goal.
The Science and Technology Directorate of the NHS has several Apex programs that it administers in conjunction with other DHS components to secure the future of America ( Department of Homeland Security, 2019 ). One such program is the Apex Air Entry/Exit Re-engineering (AEER) program. This program has been developed in collaboration with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to use the biometric capability to verify the departure of foreigners from U.S entry airports ( Department of Homeland Security, 2019 ). S&T is working with CBP to use existing commercially available technologies, re-engineer current processes, and introduce new operational capabilities to enhance CBP operations. This will be aimed at developing, testing, and evaluating new concepts for the screening of travelers.

This will make the screening of individuals at airports easier enabling CBP to intercept threats and illegal entries. Trade and travel will be boosted due to the transformation of the arrival process and cost-effective biometric exit capacity. CBP can screen those arriving in America and confirm the departures of non-US citizens ( Department of Homeland Security, 2019 ). This ensures only verified aliens arrive in America, and only authorized foreign nationals get to stay. American immigration laws will be easily reinforced, and all dangerous or illegal aliens will leave the nation, and there will be confirmation of their departure. It will also implement operational capabilities required by federal legislation and support the National Travel and Tourism Strategy.
