The structures of an informal essay and a formal are completely different. This sets them apart, even before other differences emerge. Informal essays tend to be freely structured while the formal essay structure bases on the development of one clear argument at a time. The structure is necessary to enable it to support a clearly stated thesis. The informal essay has no set structure and is shorter than a formal essay. This is clearly visible since the informal essay just states facts or assumption with defending them. It is clear that unlike formal essays, informal essays have no concrete standardized structure and thus tend to be shorter. The formal essay is much broader than the informal essay. While an informal essay is always shallow, a formal essay goes deeper into collecting and presenting detailed information and thus has a well-defined introduction, a body, and a conclusion. This makes it a more reliable presentation of thoughts compared to the informal essay.

Formal research essays are usually argumentative. In this regard, a formal essay tries to convince the reader to agree with the facts and even adopt the author's way of reasoning. Also, formal essays are written in third person perspective which makes them sound assertive. The statements used goes beyond just stating the facts. Also, because they are written in the third person approach, formal essay sound professional and authoritative, even before they incorporate and elaborate feasts.
