High school is a vital chapter in an individual’s life. In high school, learners are allowed to express themselves not only academically but also socially. Students usually would spend their high school years building their interaction skills, and these are of important use in the outside world. According to the United States Education system, high school learners attend school for four years.
The US system should change its perspective on time spent in high school. Instead of banking a lot on time spent within school, the system should focus instead on making better use of any of this time. This should be geared towards recognizing learners for their achievements. Most pupils take about three years to be ready to go to college but the last year is of importance too. High school should be made more flexible and not class and test-oriented in entirety. (Michael, 2013) There should be a balance between academic and other activities in which, most students will not get bored of the system.

There is a high rate of high school dropouts in the US. Students sometimes feel like they are not achieving relevance and decide to quit school. Students are different, some have the ability to grasp knowledge faster while others are slow learners. However, four years in high school is enough time to allow the student to think about their career and work towards it. High school should be a place of motivating teenager’s progress. Thus, enable students to go for vocational training, life skills training and career seminars in the four years. In so doing, students will be motivated to prove their ability in mastering individual elements. Schools should not let a student who wants to be a veteran, for example, spend a lot of time in a Mathematics class mastering formulas when the student could be in a laboratory learning new things or in a science class. (Sam, 2014). It should be about relevance from the start and not at the time.
With many people feeling that high school years should be made short or long, time is of not much importance. Four years in high school is not much time nor is it less, if in fact, it’s just enough time, relative to the wealth of knowledge and experience that students get to amass during their times there. Making the years two or six for high school kids is a great danger. Teenagers need time to grow and at the age of sixteen most of them could yes, have the college requirements and even be ready for college education, but they need time to grow out of their adolescence in preparation for a different type of world. So, if there is to be the institution of any changes to the curriculum, the same should focus not on the content spent there but on the relevance of the elements that are particularly availed in a class set up.
