Drive-By Truckers - 9/26/19 -Live from Tipitina in New Orleans.
I was very intrigued by the concert and performance by Drive-By Truckers on the 26 th September, 2019. It took place in Tipitina New Orleans and was probably one of the best concerts I have ever attended. A total of 26 songs were performed, all breath-taking and captivating and from the genre’s Alternative country/Southern rock band. The songs had a blended mix of southern pride with erudite lyrics and strong-heavy guitar. Listening to the concert changed my view of the band because of the passion with which they played music. They were well synchronized and psyched, making sure they engaged their audience throughout their performance. I respect their music style and loved their role in alternative country rock.
The lead composers in all the songs are Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley and Jason Isbell. They were also the lead guitarists and just from listening to them, one could tell that they were fervent on what they were singing.

The roles were as follows; Jason Isbell, Patterson Hood, Mike Cooley-singer/guitarists, Shonna Tucker and John Neff-guitarists, Spooner Oldham a keyboardist, Brand Mogan the drummer, Jay Gonzalez and David Barbe Guitarist/keyboardists. From the list of singers performed, I must say that my best performance was A Ghost to Most. It carried a deep message based on how Cooley described the government’s reaction and non-reaction to Hurricane Katrina, having been a victim of the catastrophe himself. I believe that this exploration shows a true description of his passion towards music and his connection to the public and criticism to the authority based on past events in the country.
One of the main things that sets their performance apart is that it addressed the changing political environment in the country. They were not just singing to entertain people, but also making sure they passed a message to their audience, the public and government on their perspective of the past political events. As strong believers in a liberal world, some of the songs performed highlighted issues related to race, social class and violence. Hood and Cooley took an equal share in writing the songs and raising concern over the growing divisions in the nation.
The key attributes of a successful songwriter and musician/band is their ability to successfully connect to their audience and pass a meaningful message that may impact their lives. I believe through this performance in New Orleans, the band did exactly what their songs were intended to do. They reached out to as many people as possible and redefined my understanding of what real rock n roll music feels like.
One of the most interesting things about the performance is that even though about half of the audience were familiar with the band and knew the words to the songs, they were completely surprised by the power with which the band played. We all ended up singing along and pumping our fists wit our heads banging and bodies dancing because we enjoyed listening to their performance. They had three singers who alternated and blended together harmonically to bring out exceptional vocals in their work. Rhythm was also evident from the way the musical instruments were intertwined and synchronized to bring out perfect tunes and melodies.
Standing there listening to their tracks showed me that the genre is alive and very relevant in the modern society. Some people think that because the world has undergone a major transformation over the past decades, this kind of music has been outdated. I believe the millennials would gain a considerable amount of experience from such a performance instead of focusing on modern-day songs that are performed with no intended meaning/impact.
