The talkbox and vocoder technologies differ in various ways. For instance, the vocoder technology entails utilizing electronic devices with the goal of synthesizing music in such a manner that a person can sing or talk into a microphone, while at the same time playing an instrument, especially a keyboard. Electronics then deploy the voice’s tone to the instrument’s notes. For the talkbox technology, it revolves around the use of mechanical devices, especially small speakers whose midrange horn drivers are highly powered while linked to a plastic hose. The sound coming from the speaker rises up the hose up to a person’s mouth, in which a person can filter the sound via the shape of the mouth.

People usually confuse the vocoder and the talkbox technology mostly because the sound of the two is usually similar. The similarity in this sense mostly emanates from the harmonic element, which leads the entire thing sound as if the instrument of music is speaking. Whereas they establish a sound that resembles the one of the human voice due to harmonic content, particularly the formants, although based on choice or design, they do not have a natural vibrato as well as glissando, which are attributed to the voice of humans.

On a music sometimes referred to as a ‘vocoder’ song, which actually utilizes a talkbox, ‘Haitian Divorce’ by Steely Dan serves one of them. For the music, it actually used the talkbox technology whereas the perfection of the music within the studio and the device’s novelty lead it to seem as a vocoder song. Also, concerning why the vocoder technology, as opposed to the talkbox, it was something the telecommunications industry showed tremendous interest in. The reason for this was that the sector found a way of using electronic means for coding speech in such a manner that it would manage to reduce bandwidth, such as compressing audio data, which facilitated multiplexing transmission.
