Earthquakes and tsunamis leave in their wake; destruction, devastation and unparalleled carnage, leading to insurmountable loss of lives in addition to loss of property. Earthquakes are caused when insuperable pressure from within the earth’s crust results in the sudden ripping apart of the tectonic plates. This could be as a result of erupting volcano or the gradual and constant shifting of the earth’s tectonic plates.

A tsunami on the other hand is defined as a concatenation of ocean waves which is caused by the displacement of large masses of water, from the depths of the ocean. This vertical displacement of the water is caused under water earthquakes, volcano eruptions, and massive landslides among other natural catastrophes which could result in the displacement of unassailable volumes of water.

The main difference between earthquakes and Tsunamis is the fact that Tsunamis occur at the depths of seas and oceans. Diversely, earthquakes occur often on land, with a few earthquakes revealed to have occurred at sea. Contrary to popular opinion therefore, while most Tsunamis occur as a result of underwater earthquakes, this is not the only causal factor for Tsunamis. Consequently, not all earthquakes that occur at sea or along the coast line result in Tsunamis, as Tsunamis manifest from earthquakes with large magnitudes and deep focal lengths.

Adding to the bargain, deaths from earthquakes have been identified to be caused by the collapse of buildings in addition to the collapse or falling of structures and objects, which subsequently harm individuals during the earthquake. Else ways, Tsunamis are catastrophic, causing deaths both on sea, by capsizing yachts and ships, and on land by drowning, and carrying away individuals who haven’t taken the necessary measures during the Tsunamis.
