Part 2: Activity for Extending Children’s Learning
Activity Name and Summary
The activity is about Children Learning about the Family. The lesson plan will provide the students with a means of learning concerning the distinct family types. Once the kids read an engaging book, they will be required to create their individual family pictures.
Objectives
The purpose of lesson plan is to ensure that the students learn about the nature of the family. The objectives of the plan will comprise of the following

Materials
Using relevant materials when teaching children is a crucial undertaking during the learning process. For this lesson, the materials to be used will comprise of “Families” book by Sheila Kelly and Shelly Rotner, paper, and markers or crayons. The book will be used for introducing the students to the family, different types, and the different roles that they play. The students will use the paper and markers/crayons to draw their family members.
Lesson Implementation
Implementing a lesson is a vital undertaking to ensure that the students realize improved outcomes of the process. For this lesson plan, the teacher will implement it by focusing on the following tasks.
Ask the learners about the people in their families
Tell the students of the distinct individuals that might be in their families, ranging from parents to cousins to grandparents
Read “Families” around to the students
Request the learners to create a link between the things they identify in the book in line with what they see in their individual families. The students will be required to turn to their partners while sharing things they believe are similar and those that are different
Create a group that will share their comparisons
Illustrate what will be the main area of emphasis on the family that resides in homes. Share the idea that families might be of various varieties. Families might have two dads, two moms, and mom and a dad, a grandmother among others. Certain individuals have several homes in which they live.
Tell the learners that they will draw the pictures of the members of their family that they reside with
Direct the students on ways of drawing pictures for the different family members
Request the students to share the differences that exist in their family members and friends
Hand out the papers to every learner while requiring them to work independently to complete the pictures of their families
Assessment
To assess the effectiveness of the lesson in meeting the objectives, the teacher will evaluate how the leaners illustrate their families and differentiating between friends and family. The educator will call upon the students asking them to explain their family members. The teacher will also make sure to assess the drawings of the students to determine whether they have labeled their family members as they are in there respective positions in the family structure.
Part 3: Lesson Modifications and/or Accommodations
The student selected for lesson modification and/or accommodations is Ari. She adds female clothes to her snowman changing its name to “snow lady,” which leads her to feel that she has done something special. In this case, a key lesson modification when dealing with Ari to boost her creativity is to make the snowman making process is fun. The teacher might request Ari to give a story concerning the snowman that she makes while associating it with real life situations. This approach would play a critical role in boosting her creativity. An additional lesson modification when dealing with Ari should revolve around fostering a question-friendly environment. Assisting Ari to ask questions regarding her project would allow her to get more ideas on how to improve her snowman. Encouraging her to ask questions would ensure that she shows more openness while showing less fear when speaking. This would nurture a childlike sense of wonder as she learns and grows. The last lesson accommodation should revolve around encouraging new skills. The educator should focus on fostering new ideas as well as unique perspective of designing her doll (Gestwicki, 2013) . This approach would engage different brain parts, which would contribute toward Ari’s creativity when creating her snowman and other future projects .
Part 4: Reflection on Three Core DAP Considerations
Developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) is a teaching strategy that focuses on researching the manner in which young kids develop a well as learn to foster effective education during early childhood. It aims at promoting the optimal development and learning of young children. In my case, one of the major DAP consideration would be understanding child development and learning. Understanding normal learning and development at distinct ages would be an ideal starting point in that it assists in predicting the experiences that would back the development and learning of children (Copple, Bredekamp, Koralek, & Charner, 2014) . In the lesson plan, I have addressed the consideration by ensuring to meet with the different students to assess their level of understanding of the project while assisting them whenever they require help in comprehending the concepts being taught.
A second DAP consideration that I would focus on would be focusing on knowing what is individually appropriate to the children. The things that I would learn about specific kids would assist me in refining decisions concerning ways of teaching and caring for them individually. Ensuring to observe the children as they learn about the family while relating with the environment and other children would assist in learning about each child’s abilities, interests, and developmental progress (Copple, Bredekamp, Koralek, & Charner, 2014) . From the lesson plan, I addressed the consideration by creating groups in which the student would discuss and share ideas when learning about their families.
The last DAP consideration that I would deploy is one of understanding what is culturally important to the kids. I will ensure to embark on efforts for knowing the families of the children while learning concerning their expectations, value, and values shaping their lives at home as well as within their community (Gestwicki, 2013) . Having this background information would offer me relevant, meaningful, and respectful learning encounters for the different children and their families (Beaty, 2013) . From the lesson plan, I have addressed the consideration by requiring the students to learn about their family and create pictures of them allowing them to have increased understanding of family values.
