Elizabeth Barret Browning remain a household name in the world of literature and poetry courtesy of her innovative and intellectually challenging verses that were highly regarded. Her works laid her foundation as an accomplished poet in the 19 th century. Arguably, she is best known for having authored Aurora Leigh and Sonnets from the Portuguese which coincidentally or deliberately touched on her personal life.
Sonnets from the Portuguese were a collection of forty four sonnets given to her husband and fellow poet Robert Browning with whom she eloped to evade the wrath of her father, who disapproved of their union. There is a famous line in the 43 rd sonnet which says “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways” which later touched on the nickname given to her by her husband (Chien Ming Chang, 2014). Additionally, the poems sheds more light on their courtship days and moments when she was overly reluctant to give into the advances of her husband before finally giving and finding peace with him.

Similarly Aurora Leigh, her other piece of work, mixes both elements of poetry and the novel. Much still, the novel gives a chronological order of the life of Aurora from childhood as she develops her craft of poetry. The life of Aurora is quite similar to that of Elizabeth Browning in that they are not only artists in the field of poetry but also have a home in Italy (Kent, 2015). Aurora was born in Italy, however, Elizabeth eloped with her husband to the country. They both become experts in their fields with their lives seemingly ending with the same script. Aurora marries Romney with who she wins love, poetic career besides being famous and powerful just like Elizabeth Browning.
