The presentation starts with an introduction which explains what is a disaster and disaster management. Different disasters have happened in the world in the recent past, whereby some have been more catastrophic, claiming lives and destroying property worth billions of dollars. This, therefore, calls for the need for elaborate disaster management approaches to address the issues. Emergencies need to be addressed critically with effective disaster management procedures. Further, emergencies can be mitigated and managed if elaborate measures are put in place.

Effective emergency management is dependent on comprehensive plan both locally and at the federal level. An effective disaster management strategy depends on the leadership in place as it is the one tasked with coming up with initiatives that can mitigate and contain a disaster. Institutions have a duty of researching on vulnerable areas coordination of emergency efforts in times of disaster. There are four main stages of disaster management. These stages are mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.

The mitigation stage aims to mitigate disasters and minimize the impact on case disasters happen. There are two types of mitigation actions; structural and non-structural. Structural entails developing structures such as levees or walls to mitigate flooding while non-structural is involved in identifying a problem, planning, investigating, and legislating through the activity’s timeline.

The preparedness stage is where leaders propose measures that need to be taken before, during, and after an emergency. It involves the use of elaborate communication and dissemination of information.

The response stage happens during disasters and entails resource mobilization to be applied in disaster areas. The recovery stage, which is the final stage, aims to return normalcy. It entails doing activities that will return the society or affected area to its original state. Recovery methods include rebuilding, planning, and researching effective methods to be used in case of another disaster.
