Emerging Adulthood: The In-Between Age

I think Annet’s ideas about emerging adulthood are well researched and are a reflection of not only other works about transitioning to adulthood but, most importantly, a presentation of facts generated from multiple viewpoints, most of which are varied but provide useful insight on the topic( Arnett, 2007) . In light of what it is like to transition to adulthood at the current age where the media and technology have a profound impact on adolescent’s growth, I believe that her assertions that other terms such as late adolescents, young adulthood and transition to adulthood are not the best to describe this phenomenon that has been realized in recent times. I strongly agree with her assertion that although emerging adulthood is a concept that resonates with many, those that fall under this category seem not to grow and undertake adulthood responsibilities( Arnett, 2007) . 

Culture plays a significant role in one’s development. While contemporary culture has taken center stage in different spaces, it is imperative to understand that some communities are yet to experience the full wave of westernization. Just as the author asserts, the main features of emerging adulthood are likely to vary in different cultures dramatically( Arnett, 2007) . Since Ethnic groups have norms that are unique to their individual lifestyles, emerging adulthood might have only a few intertwined aspects in different cultures. Most probably, notable disparities are likely to exist. The author says that those who fall under the emerging adulthood category have fewer social roles than individuals raised in a structured manner where aspects such as work and family play a significant role in their upbringing ( Arnett, 2007) . This touches on the question of culture in that some communities have a culture that supports the upbringing of a child by the whole family or even societal efforts. Such an individual is unlikely to experience adulthood in the same way that those who do not grow in such a culture do. An individual who has recently migrated to the US, say from a cohesive society is unlikely to relate to emerging adulthood. Research efficacy on the topic will only be achieved if all the multidimensional aspects associated with this topic are considered.
