The rational emotive behavior therapy is counseling that is primarily focused on how the client thinks rather than what they feel or how they behave. The argument is that there exists a relationship between the way the client thinks and the way they feel. The theory on this relationship was expressed by Albert Ellis who argued that by ignoring the thoughts of the patient, then there is a risk of denying the patient the actual type of therapy or psychological advice that they may need. Focusing on the thoughts of a client is as essential as the explanation of the problem that actually pushed them into seeking counseling. Before this therapy was advanced by Albert Ellis, psychologists did not take any keen interest in the thoughts of their clients and did their business by the book, considering what was important as the feelings and behavior of the client.
When I had an accident and faced the possible reality of actually having one of my legs amputated, I was filled by a mixture of feelings and emotions. I started questioning the very worthiness of my existence should I lose one of my limbs. How was my life going to be like? How would my friends and other people that mattered in my life perceive me? I had lost all meaning to life and actually compared my life to my limb. I underwent great mental torture that would later come to strengthen me in life and the way I would tell my story.

Many are the times most of us fail to think rationally. This unfortunate event is caused by an over exaggeration by our minds in the way we perceive a certain problem. For my case in particular, I was not even sure that they were going to amputate one of my legs but the mere thought that possibility gave me sleepless nights. Fortunately, I did not lose my leg. If I had continued believing that I would lose my leg, maybe I would have committed suicide but am happy today am alive and strong to tell my story in a different way, more so to those who think they are at their end. REBT changed my perception of life and am a different person today- “It is never over until it is over”.
