The research on motivation and emotion, focusing on the roles of optimism and pessimism, is the most interesting. After investigating 15,000 people who applied for positions in life insurance sales and a select group of 129 people who fumbled in the application, the study concluded that optimists overall stick to difficult and challenging jobs. In contrast, pessimists perform worse than predicted in such employment. Thus finding the two factors in human potential are ability and optimism or pessimism.
Envy and admiration are two critical emotions that people experience when they encounter someone better than them (Ven, 2015). The purpose of Ven’s research was to test the actions and tendencies associated with the two passions. Since there are different scientific publications on which activities are motivated by the two emotions, the study attempts to scrutinize and figure out which actions and behaviors are provoked with envy and admiration.

According to Miceli and Castelfranchi, benign jealousy is closely related to commendation and that jealously itself does not yield motivation to work on oneself. On the other hand, according to Van de Ven et al., envy provokes a motivation to alleviate oneself, and that appreciation does not result in an inspiration to alleviate oneself. On a different note, Schindler et al. established that admiration yielded a motivation to alleviate oneself (Ven, 2015). To solve the research problem, Ven tested the research question via a single study that leveraged two samples; a US sample with 162 participants and a Dutch sample with 192 participants. Motivation measures and emotion measures were conducted on both samples by asking participants to elaborate on the two emotions when they found someone better than them (Ven 2015). The research established that both jealously and admiration yield an inspiration to alleviate oneself.
