Describe the role of the Institutional Review Board (IRB)

The Institutional Review Board is a body mandated to ensure the rights, wellbeing, and safety of human subjects involved in a clinical trial are observed (Cornell University, 2007). The IRB first reviews the research methods that have been proposed for the trial to ensure that they meet ethical standards. The board also conducts a risk-benefit analysis and decides if the research should go on. After reviewing all the aspects of the trial, the IRB has the right to approve the trial to be carried out or to stop.

What considerations do you anticipate concerning IRB and your proposed study? Explain

IRB will identify and assess the risks involved in the research. The risks involved may either be psychological, physical or socio-economic. They also have to ensure that the methods used do not infringe on the privacy of the subject or violates their confidentiality. The board then determines whether safety precautions have been put in place to minimize the risks. Another consideration is the anticipated benefit of the study. The benefit of the study to the subject and the society will be assessed. The risk-benefit has to be considered, the benefits of carrying out the study have to outweigh the risks taken (Research, 2017).

Summarize APA Code of Ethics in your own words

The American Psychological Association (APA) code of ethics guides psychologists on the principles and ethical conduct in the dispensation of their duties. The code of ethics is concerned about the welfare of clients by requiring that psychologists avoid undue harm to people they work with. The principles of ethical conduct are a guide to the responsibilities of psychologists. Psychologists have to ensure that their actions are ethical (EFPA, 2015).

Discuss the importance of adhering to a code of ethics in research.

The code of ethics has to be adhered to ensure that researchers do not purposely give information that is deceitful or that may cause harm to clients or the public. The code of ethics also provides a guideline on how to gather information without violating the rights of the subjects. It’s also essential in solving conflicts that may arise during the research process since it provides a guide on how situations have to be resolved (EFPA, 2015).
