Ethics can be defined as a system of moral principles that affect how people decide and how they live. Ethics can also be a set of principles or concepts which guide human beings in determining the character and behavior, which either helps or causes harm to other creatures. Ethics has a concern regarding what is good or right for society and individuals and can also be described as the moral philosophy. It is a philosophy branch that entails defending, recommending, and systemizing right or wrong conduct concepts.
Ethics played a significant role in the civilization of the Mesopotamians. Through a commonplace, and ethics, the invention of agriculture became a reality to the Mesopotamians. They knew that agriculture was a necessity to support its growing population. To achieve that goal, they decided to form a unifying ethical code, to begin with. The Mesopotamians understood that without an ethical code, there is no civilization. This ethical code enabled them to group themselves and live in harmony. 1 Agricultural communities required formidable, well-structured defenses to avoid attacks from marauding groups of hunters and nomads.

The complex of inventions of the Mesopotamians further enhanced their civilization. Large-scale organization and language were part of these inventions. Ethics also enabled Mesopotamian communities to improvise new tools for processing, cultivating, and defending food. With time, a device to measure time was invented. The ethics of rulers and leaders in Mesopotamia was outstanding. Kings by the highest motives became good examples by being obedient to the laws they set. Everyone in the community obeyed the rules and recognized other people's rights. For instance, during the conveyance of large tracks of land to a king of Manushtusu in Northern Babylonia, kings served all the affected person with passion and love.
