Individualism can be termed as the practice of respecting and upholding people’s personal opinions, virtues and various beliefs. Over the recent past, there have been efforts and movements formed that aim to give more voice and power to individuals. All forms of leadership, mostly being political leadership, have based their central focus on making the people feel that their personal needs and objectives are most important ( Sampson, 1988) . Individualism has presented a considerable effect on the American literature since the needs and desires of communities is different to those of individuals. It is more difficult and requires more precision to handle the personal needs and observations of individuals. However, in order to fully satisfy the general majority, it is necessary for these specific needs and desires to be handled and addressed.
The past literature focused on what the general majority and what was good for the American society at large. It became difficult to reach out to people as they had personal needs and desires that were still not met and difficult to reach to. Many of the individuals were happy with how things were done and the needs being addressed were only the general ones, but there lacked some complete satisfaction which arises from the particular wants of these individuals. There are various uprisings that fought for the fight of individualism over the periods that passed regarding the issues of individualism ( Sampson, 1988) . People have advocated for more personal rights and interests to be satisfied as well as those of the society. The effects of this kind of radicalism can be experienced up to date with the formation of bodies such as justice systems that fight for the rights and freedoms of people in groups and mostly, as individuals.

The increase in focus on individualism shows that people have a voice for their needs to be addressed. It can be proven that the role of an individual in the American society is more defined and has more power than people would think. There were very little or no emphasis given to individualism but when the rise in concern became more intense, it became a matter worth being addressed more vigilantly ( Hansen, 2014) . Literature has seen these changes that have gradually developed to the level of importance that is experienced in the modern world. The changes show that the role of the individual is quite major. The ordinary individual who was not highly regarded in the past now has a lot of say when it comes to championing for their rights and their needs and desires.
In the past, it was assumed that the only individuals whose needs were to be addressed with urgency were those of leaders only. The role of individuals has increased to the point where people without major roles in society also have rights and needs that the society is expected to respect and see to that these needs are met. Provided the methods used in achieving these needs are not illegal or immoral, then every individual has the right to satisfy their various needs ( Hansen, 2014) . Individuals now have a say in society and literature spearheads these changes in society that enable everyone understand the role of individuals in the society. Literature gives an understanding of what people should know regarding the role of individual and the changes that have occurred over time. The importance of this is to make every individual aware of the various rights and needs they can freely satisfy.
