The process of planning for the construction of a facility or a stadium can be very involving. It includes coming up with estimations for the materials costs, and the required deliverables at each stage. The process of planning for the recently built Fisht Olympic Stadium offers insights into the whole undertaking.

The Planning Process

The first step in the planning is the designing and budgeting part which is crucial to the successful delivery of the project. In the case of the Fisht arena, the design was carried out by Populous, a British design firm. The estimated initial budget was US$779 million (Stadium Database, 2017). The aim of this stage was to come up with a design that would leave a legacy for Russia and inspire pride and patriotism among the citizenry (Architecture and Design, 2017). Therefore, it is no surprise that the design team chose to give the arena the shape of a jewel-encrusted Faberge eggs which remain iconic in the country (Koolhaas, Trüby & Davis, 2014). This part of the planning took about the 1 year. Having carried the initial design, the next step would involve choosing the technology to use and construction method. Among the concerns was selecting the right concrete to use in respect to the often harsh Russian winters. This part took 3 months (Bo & Vamling, 2013).

The definition of tasks took place alongside the selection of the technology and involved the arrangement and scheduling of tasks. This step took about 2 months and resulted in schedules of work and timetable for delivery (Architecture and Design, 2017). After that, it was then time to decide on the resource requirements for each activity and fine tuning of the allocation schedule, all of which took 1 month (Architecture and Design, 2017).
