This article analyzes the issue of acculturation and the factors which influence acculturation of refugees in the American society ( Hauck, Lo, Maxwell & Reynolds 2014, pp. 332) . This article presents a study carried out among immigrant communities to determine how they have adapted to a foreign culture in the US and factors have enhanced or hampered the adaptation ( Hauck, Lo, Maxwell & Reynolds 2014, pp. 334) . Some of the factors which have been identified in this article as influencing acculturation include language barriers, level of social support, and financial stability ( Hauck, Lo, Maxwell & Reynolds 2014, pp. 336) .
It is indicated in this article that language barriers, and particularly proficiency in the English language, is a major factor which influences the acculturation process ( Hauck, Lo, Maxwell & Reynolds 2014, pp. 338) . In a study carried out as shown in the article, refugees indicated that their inability to speak fluent English has worked to their disadvantage and has hampered their ability to learn about the new culture they have found in US ( Hauck, Lo, Maxwell & Reynolds 2014, pp. 340) . Language barrier has generally hampered their ability to fit into the society and access services such as medical care since they cannot communicate with physicians unless there are interpreters to help ( Hauck, Lo, Maxwell & Reynolds 2014, pp. 342) .

Social support is also another factor which has been shown in this article to influence acculturation ( Hauck, Lo, Maxwell & Reynolds 2014, pp. 344) . It has been shown that those refugees who have strong social ties have been able to acculturate easily since they receive help from other members ( Hauck, Lo, Maxwell & Reynolds 2014, pp. 346) . However, those that do not have strong social ties like the Iraq refugees find it hard to acculturate.
Lastly, it has been shown that refugees who are financially stable achieve acculturation easily as compared to those that are not financially stable ( Hauck, Lo, Maxwell & Reynolds 2014, pp. 348) . However, in general, the article indicates that there is a high optimism among all refugees.
