Bowenian theory was developed by Mury Bowen and it’s a human behavior theory that analyses how family behavior patterns are intergenerational and uses the family emotional constituent. It focuses on the mental aspects and behaviors and how they are transmitted in a generational cycle. Structural theory was developed by Salvador Minuchin and it views family mental behaviors as symptoms in the family context and not as patterns like in the Bowenian theory. The main objective of this therapy is to reduce dysfunction by changing the unit of the family (Colapinto, 2015) . Strategic family systems theory was developed by Jam Haley . It views family behaviors and systems as the actual predicament that reflects the functions of the family. It emphasizes on the social circumstances. Its main goal is problem solving, achieve family objectives that will eventually change the individuals dysfunction.
The use of genogram in treatment of addiction issues in family. Just like a family tree, the genogram goes back the family history and creates a picture of the family behaviors, relationships and dynamics (Murdock, 2013). It also offers insight on the disorders that may be there in the family like mental illnesses, alcoholism and other conditions. As a therapist I can use it to create interpretations on the addiction of the client and the underlying root cause of the individual situation. It will help in determining the behaviors and struggles within the family. A genogram is polite way involving and creating a connection between the client and therapist. It will also help the client relate his challenge to the larger family unit and know whether or not his/her problems are hereditary and weigh them against the environmental influence. Information gathered from a genogram is useful in planning for treatment by aiming at various levels of unhealthy relationships.
