Work-life balance initiative is a program implemented by organizations to help motivate employees and allow them some time off from work to do other life concern issues. What factors should managers take into consideration when presented with an employee’s request for a work-life balance arrangement?

The managers should consider the organizational need at that particular time. The operations of the institution must continue, and therefore the manager needs to weigh whether the operations can continue even when the request is granted. If the firm’s operations can still proceed when the arrangement is given to the employee, then the manager can consider giving the arrangement. The managers should also consider the honesty of the employee is making an application for the arrangement. It has been seen that some employees take the initiative for granted, viewing it as a norm rather than a benefit. Anyone who is not in a situation that needs the arrangement should not be given the application request. The managers must also take into account that parents with children of less than six years have the right to be granted flexible work. They must hence understand whether whoever is applying for the arrangement falls under the category of parents with less than six years children or not.

How should managers communicate their decisions on work-life balance applications?

Managers should communicate their decisions based on a case by case method. They need to deal with one application at a time, weigh relevant issues relating to the continuity of the operations and then give a detailed explanation to the employee. When rejecting the request, the manager must explain to the employee the reasons for rejecting the offer. It will make the employee erase the feeling of being discriminated which will finally demotivate the employee. For example, if the reason for rejection is by personnel limitation, the manager must explain to the employee that at that given moment the offer can’t be granted, but the same will be done shortly when another person who is on similar arrangement comes back. While issuing the request for the arrangement, the manager needs to tell the employee the main reason why the application has been given. It will assist employees to see the mechanism as a right but instead, see it as a benefit to both the worker and the organization. Therefore, the way managers deliver their decisions conclusions on the work-life balance arrangement is very significant.

In addition to the types of work-life balance arrangements at SCS, what other initiatives can you think of? An organization can also motivate its employees by introducing various incentive programs by setting a reward for the best performers and those who successfully meet their target. It will drive employees to work hard to be the best performer. Employees always like being recognized for the job well done. Always appreciate and reward best workers. Another way to motivate employees is to pay them well. A good pay will inspire workers to do their best and ever feel satisfied with their jobs. Empowering employees by assigning them various challenging duties and delegation of some decisions can help motivate employees and make them innovative. Annually, the firm can take employees for a tour to make them get to relax and freshen up. Touring a new environment away from the workplace can reduce boredom and make employees fresh for next day’s work.
