I wrote my first résumé a few months ago. My experience was pretty hard and confusing. I wanted to have a very good résumé, so I sought the internet for advice and a good outline. Problem is there were so many tips and suggestions. So I decided to follow the simplest outlay then add on from that.
I put in most of the information needed but had issues with some areas. One of them was work experience; I did not have much information to put. I ended up repeating a lot of the things I have done just to try and have some substantial experience to share. Another mistake I learnt was that I was using this one résumé for all types of job applications instead of tailoring it specifically to each job. I also thought having a long résumé was the way to go. Lastly, I thought once done with that one résumé I would not have to think about résumés again.

The advice I would give my friend is based on the lessons I learnt. To tackle lack of experience, I learnt it is okay to share some of the school and volunteer activities I had participated in instead of repetition of details. I also included the achievements I had whilst participating in these activities. I missed possible jobs because I never tailed my résumé to that job, it is important to align ones résumé to the job. This means only relevant information to the job will be shared. Long résumés do not really count for anything, it is important to get to the point and be clear not to ramble on about information. It is important to thoroughly read through your résumé to ensure it makes sense, has no errors and is perfect. Regular updates help you ensure you are recording all the new experiences and achievements you have gained.
