The primary goal of psychoanalysis according to Freud was to make the unconscious conscious. The Pleasure-Principle makes the unconscious part of the mind to strive for pleasure and avoid possible displeasure. Freud theory is best understood through the analysis of Id, Ego, and Super-ego ( Kline, 2013). To understand the concept of psychoanalysis focusing on Freud’s Theory of Psychosexual Development is believed to be significant. Sigmund Freud's Theory of Psychosexual Development has been extensively applied in various areas primarily related to mental functioning. On the other hand, Erik Erikson came up with a psychoanalytic theory to explain the psychosocial development, and it is comprised of eight phases ranging from infancy to adulthood ( McLeod , 2017). According to Erickson, at each stage, an individual tend to experience a specific psychosocial crisis that has either a positive or negative result for the personality development.

Freud’s and Erik Erikson psychosexual theories form two of the most critical psychoanalytic theories that focus on human development. The two can be used to understand the development effects efficiently. Erikson theory was believed to have followed Freud’s theory where it was founded on several ideas developed by Freud ( McLeod , 2017). Therefore, based on this, it becomes clear that the two theories have significant similarities. The two further recognizes the significance of unconscious on the development.

However, the two theories have specific differences mainly in the names used in various development stages and issues encountered at each phase. The reason for this is that the two psychologists had their perspectives of what exactly drives an individual’s development. Freud's psychosexual theory, for instance, tends to lay more emphasis on the importance of both biological and basic needs forces ( Kline, 2013). On the other hand, Erickson theory is founded on the environmental and social factors. In addition to this, Erickson apparently expanded the theory into adulthood, but Freud ultimately ends the theory at an earlier period.
