The video is relevant in mand training as it illustrates the intervention approach applied in teaching children with limited communication skills how to express their needs and wants. The child points at what they require thus presenting a choice. Less physical guidance is provided to establish if the student is aware of what they need. As the student learns to choose what they want through pointing, they develop functional communication skills. They are also able to choose independently.
The procedure of guiding the student to request something using pointing can be used to develop functional communication skills. In the first step, items are held in front of the student and are expected to point at the one they want. Physical guidance can be offered by directing the hand of the child to what they require. In the second step, items are placed in front of him, and when they point to something independently, it should be provided. The student in the video pointed out the juice and was provided. When the student tries to reach for an item, physical guidance is offered by showing the students to point to what they require (Association for Science in Autism Treatment. (n.d.). Lack of interest in things leads to holding them in front of the child so that they can gain interest in pointing out what they want.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
In the last step, items are placed at an increased distance, and the child is allowed to independently chose the object they prefer. Guiding the learner physically on how to point what they want leads to developing functional communication skills. Instead of reaching out to an item, the students point out, and the thing is provided to them. The student pointing out to the item independently makes it clear what they require.
To contrive motivation, the educator can use three different colors bottles and prompt the child to reach for the one with juice. The colored bottles will be reinforcing items. Two bottles will be empty and since the child wants the juice, he will reach out to all bottles, lift them up till he finds the one filled with juice.
