Duchamp mainly influenced Dada, futuristic and conceptual art. The Dada movement mainly created artwork which was considered meaningless. For example Bicycle Wheel does not show the artist’s originality. Duchamp just picked a ready-made stool and wheel and promoted them as works of art. On the surface, they are just assemblages with no special theme. Futuristic art is mostly manifested in Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase. The piece of art does not follow the conventional styles that existed at the moment. Therefore, the art indicated that artists in the future were likely to break away from the conventional styles. Lastly, conceptual art emphasizes on an artist’s idea rather than authenticity or aesthetics. Duchamp in a prominent way influenced how modern artists create concepts or art from various ideas as opposed to adhering to popular styles.

Marcel Duchamp was part of the cubism movement and Dadaism. However, he was rejected from the cubism movement especially after the exhibition of Nude Descending a Staircase. Many people failed to see nudism in his artwork because the painting seemed to be too mixed up. Some people and even artists thought the work was complete trash. However, they would later categorize Duchamp’s art into the Dada movement.

Jean Tinguely is evidently influenced by Marcel Duchamp and the Dada movement. Jean’s Homage to New York does not have a particular theme. It is an artwork made by assembling ready-made components together, just the same way Duchamp did. Jean puts the artwork on fire, most likely questioning what art is. Therefore, the two elements similar to Duchamp’s art are that Homage to New York is made from assembled ready-made materials and has humor. The artwork belongs to Dada movement because it does not have any meaning, as well as lacks the visual or aesthetic appeal.
