Art is vital not only for the pleasure of the viewer but also useful in making the viewer question the societal norms with a view of inspiring change. This fact has made art grow leaps and bounds and transform over the years to form modern art as it is today. Political polarization and societal shifts were responsible for various art movements, for instance, the Feminist Art and Black Art Movement which wished to do away with the cultural confinements that women artists had been subjected to for years making them not reach the heights of renowned male artists such as Da Vinci. This paper will create an online gallery describing two works of art from the Conceptual and Feminist art movements.

Title: In Mourning and In Rage (1977)
Artist: Suzanne Lacy, Leslie Labowitz, and Bia Lowe
Artwork Description:
This piece is one of the most renowned arts during the Feminist art movement and was inspired by artists such as Suzanne and her counterparts. This art is a good example of how feminists’ art can be used to extend social awareness on issues affecting women leading to real change. It involved a public demonstration of grief by a group of women, some of whom adorned in black, to condemn violence against women at a time when a serial killer was on the loose targeting young women and girls (Feminist Art Movement, Artists and Major Works, 2017). The reason as to why I chose this art is due to its effectiveness and success levels it achieved in condemning violence against women and its fight to promote the safety of the so-called weaker gender.

Title: Anatomy of a Kimono (1974)
Artist: Miriam Schapiro
Medium: Fabric and acrylic on canvas
Artwork Description:
This was one of the many art forms created by Schapiro and is based mainly on Japanese patterns of fans and robes. The work contained high levels of embroidery, painting and other decorative techniques which often highlighted women’s relation to those materials. The Anatomy of a Kimono is made from a collection of handkerchiefs which is fabric instead of paint. I chose this art due to its simplicity yet complexity at the same time in elevating the roles played by women in a male dominated art industry at the time.
