Title of the artwork : Girl with Pigtails

The material used : Oil on Canvas

Name of artist: Amedeo Modigliani

Year completed : 1918

The drawing is that of a young girl dressed in a simple plain dress. Her hair is tied up in two roughly done braids. The painting takes a scale design with red-orange color fairly distributed across the girl’s face, clothing, and the room ( Girl with pigtails , n.d.). In essence, this insinuates the presence of a candle, lamp, or sunset lighting. The emphasis is on the girl’s face. Her cheeks are colored, her eyes are wide opened, and she stares directly at the viewer with an expressionless look. Additionally, her mouth is slightly open as if she wants to say something but is not sure about it. Essentially, the impression of the painting is that of a young woman trying to fight her way through the pressures of life. Being young makes her curious but, at the same time, unsure of what is right and wrong. Her simple dressing and hairstyle symbolize her innocence. She is new to the adulthood world. Her cheeks redden as she discovers the world of womanhood.

The positive space of the painting is occupied by the girl while the negative space contains a chair that the girl is seated on; a portion of a wooded door and a wall behind the girl. The negative space defines the girls surrounding that looks like a humble home. The paint has implied lines as the viewer has to create the illusion of the structure of the rest of the room in which the girl sits. Through the examination of the element of art, as they apply in the painting, it can be concluded that the artist was communicating the feelings of uncertainty and constant worry in the lives of young women in the early 20 th century. Indeed, at that time, there was not much opportunity or freedom for them to achieve much and lead purposeful lives.
