In studying world politics, it is important to consider how international politics has been transformed to global politics, the extent to which this process has progressed. Some of the most significant changes in this topic include the trend towards global governance, increased interdependence and interconnectedness, and new actors on the world stage ( Bowden, 2012 ). This paper discusses some of the perspectives presented by the study of global politics.

International politics holds that even though most contemporary states are considered to be nation-states or aspiring to be nation-states, it is their statehood rather than nationhood that enables them to perform effectually on the world stage. However, this state-centric approach has gradually becomes more difficult to sustain. One reason for shift is that it is no longer conceivable to consider states as the sole actors on the world stage ( Bowden, 2012 ). Non-governmental organizations, transnational corporation, and other non-state bodies have been found to be influential. In various ways and to varied extents groups and organizations from the al Qaeda, the anti-capitalist crusade, and Greenpeace to Google, and the Papacy play important roles in global politics.

With the shift of focus from international politics to global politics, it is expected that the future will be dominated by civilization issues. This will involve civilizations both within a country and those encompassing several countries ( Bowden, 2012 ). In other words, the conflict between civilizations will dominate global politics. A proper example would be the terrorist attacks of September 11 and the global war on terrorism that followed. This war demonstrated the conflict that exists between the Western and Islamic worlds. Another relevant example is the violence that ensued the Kenyan general elections of 2007, where the political opinions people in the same country sharply contrasted and led to thousands of deaths. Even with such conflicts, it has also been predicted that in the future people of different civilizations will have to learn to live together in peaceful interchange.
