Selected Public Health Issue

Mental illness has been overlooked in public discussions for a long time. Mental illnesses like depression are regarded as a non-important issue as people perceive it as a personal issue that ought to be addressed at a personal level (Bracken, Giller & Summerfield2016). Mental illness patients have also been disregarded by society with less concern about their treatment. However, mental illness has become a global issue due to dynamics witnessed in many aspects (Kirmayer& Pedersen 2014). The aspects include lifestyle, population dynamics, disease, and climate change among others. For instance, variation in lifestyles where people have engaged in more sedentary lifestyles has exposed them to stress due to lack of refreshment of brain and body (Bracken et al., 2016). Population dynamics have exposed people to stress in failing to articulate the new norms consequently becoming isolated (Jacob& Patel2014). Isolated people become depressed. Perennial diseases like cancer and HIV lead to depression and stress to victims and friends or relatives (Kirmayer& Pedersen 2014). Arguably, some patients of the perennial diseases experience more challenges from the effects of mental illnesses than the perennial diseases.

Alternative Global Public Health Issue

HIV pandemic is a global public health issue. HIV is a universally fatal disease that is mainly contracted through irresponsible sexual behaviors (Bracken et al., 2016). This pandemic is a public health issue because of the increasing immorality around theglobe (Jacob& Patel2014).Immorality is being promoted by the technological advancements that have brought about birth control methods, exposure of sexually explicit content to the public, poor guidance among others.
