Domestic terrorism has become an issue of concern in the United States in recent years. The country has witnessed a number of attacks that have been blamed on home-grown terrorists (Bucci, Carafano & Zuckerman, 2013). Such agencies as the FBI have revamped their efforts and capabilities to ensure that they are adequately equipped to combat domestic terrorism. After an examination of the capabilities of such agencies as the FBI and the country’s response to terror plots and attacks that domestic terrorists orchestrate, it is clear that the American government is fully capable to gather intelligence, and tackle domestic terrorism.

As part of its mission to keep the American people safe, the FBI has instituted a number of measures. For example, this agency has carried out intelligence reform (Bjelopera, 2013). This reform is intended to boost the capacity of the agency to collect and share intelligence regarding the operations of domestic terrorist groups and individuals. The FBI has also devised new investigative procedures and approaches such as the ‘Al Capone’ method. The FBI has also established more joint task forces that are charged with the mandate of pursuing terrorists (FBI, n.d). These measures are intended to ensure that the FBI is able to respond to the threat that domestic terrorists pose. The FBI is not the only agency that is actively combating domestic terrorism. Other security agencies across the country are also working tirelessly to eliminate domestic terrorism. The efforts of these agencies serve as evidence that the US government possesses the capabilities to collect intelligence and fight domestic terrorism.

The initiatives that such agencies as the FBI have developed help to make the case that the US government is prepared to tackle domestic terrorism. However, these initiatives can only go so far in building this case. Further and more compelling support for this argument can be found in the number of terrorist plots that have been thwarted. Since 9/11, the US has witnessed as many as 60 terror plots (Bucci, Carafano & Zuckerman, 2013). 49 of these plots have been blamed on domestic terrorists. While it is true that some of these plots have been successful, security agencies in the country have been able to thwart most of these plots. The agencies have been able to thwart as many as 50 plots (Bucci, Carafano & Zuckerman, 2012). This is clear indication that the government is effective in its intelligence gathering and war against domestic terrorism.

In conclusion, the fight against domestic terrorism demands that all concerned agencies should join forces. Agencies like the FBI have been in the forefront in this fight. This agency has developed a number of initiatives that are aimed at ensuring that domestic terrorists do not compromise the security of the American people. The efforts have already born fruit as dozens of terror plots have been thwarted. Since the threat of domestic terrorism is still present, more needs to be done.
