Sometimes expectant women get very sick in the course of their pregnancy and they are not sure what to do. Most times they feel like they will not survive pregnancy and they are lost for choices. What would be the most appropriate action for such women to take? The government argues that even an unborn non-viable child has a sacred life and it is the responsibility of the state. Under this basis, abortion must not be practiced under any circumstances. However, women feel that they should have freedom of choice in case they feel the need to terminate the baby during the first stages of pregnancy. This is because the government does not have a right to take control of a fetus that cannot support itself outside the womb because that is a personal matter.
The government prohibits any abortions or attempt to carry out abortion procedures by doctors to women 20 weeks after conception because they claim that by this time, the child would already have had life, thus, the termination of such like a pregnancy would mean the taking away of life. The government feels that if women want to protect their bodies so bad, they should give that chance to their unborn child thus they want women to view abortion as an act of selfishness. This is because they believe that life begins 20 weeks after conception and from that time onwards and it does not matter where that is, including his/her mother’s womb. The baby must be protected from any kind of harm including abortion.
However, women need to feel that they are in control of their bodies and that all that they are responsible for all the decisions they make concerning their own bodies. In addition, the government restricts abortion because of the many procedures that have gone wrong where either the mother ends up dead. More so, the government is motivated by the terrifying procedure that women have to go through. The idea of syringes injected in the abdomen causing death to the child and in other cases pills that thrush out the baby in form of blood. This alone is despicable act and the government is against it in order to safeguard life and to dignify the women. This is why motions about abortion have been so heated up and the parliament has somehow passed the law against abortion in some states.
Further in line with this, the many women who feel that their freedom has been taken away from them argue that it is their right to choose if they want to go through that or not. It is not every day that women find themselves thinking of terminating their pregnancies, but in case of a crisis during the said pregnancies, irrespective of their reasons, they should be able to choose. Due to women’s need to control their fertility for a long time, they have always looked for way to go through it despite how hard it is to access it. This is where the question of freedom comes in. does totally restricting abortion give freedom of choice to women who have difficult pregnancies or does it oppress the whole race of women no matter what they are facing at that time? In this case the government is trying to compare a fetus to teenagers and grown women with responsibilities, social relationships and plans. This is some sought of oppression because if a person can make decisions knowing their implications, it is only right to give them that chance.
Women choose to have abortions because of different reasons including poverty, careers, health issues, rape, incest and due to having a large family among other things. For instance, my friend got pregnant at 16 and she was not ready to be a mother at that time because she lacked moral support from her boyfriend and her parents were not that supportive. To her pregnancy was impossible because she had not even completed high school. She was just a confused young girl carrying a child and without moral support from anyone. Furthermore, her family was not financially stable and her boyfriend was in high school too. Such is an example of a case where pregnancy is impossible. In addition, it is also a reason as to why most women view abortion positively. The most difficult part for her was the tension between the government regulations concerning abortion and her feelings towards acting on it.
