Why do you feel the formation and development of teams is so crucial?

The formation and development of teams is quite important because it is what determines the success and high performance of the group. The development of teams is a process that takes time and always follows stages as the group transitions from its nascent level to a point of maturity (Levi, 2016). The aim of this formation and development of teams is to improve the cohesiveness of the members. At the start of the team, members are normally total strangers, particularly in the case of formal teams. Through the development of the team, members get to know each other, and as the group matures, their cohesion is strengthened.

What are the key stages of group and team development?

There are five main important stages of a team and group formation. The five stages are forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning (Levi, 2016). The stage of forming is the first one, and it is where the team members get to be introduced to each other. In the second stage of storming, team and group members compete for status and acceptance of their contribution. The team and group members start looking for ways of working together in the stage of norming. The focus of the group or team in the stage of performing is the achievement of goals and objectives based on the cohesion created among the members. During the stage of adjourning, the team is normally moving towards its end and members focus on going into different directions.

What are the consequences if a team does not build and grow cohesively?

The consequences of a team or group that does not build and grow cohesively are poor performance and failure to achieve goals as well; as objectives of the group. Members of teams or groups that do not grow cohesively advance their individual interests hence there are many conflicts, which make them perform poorly.
