Hate is a common feeling of dislike for people or things within the surrounding. Hate happens in many ways based on observable features like skin color (race), morphological characteristics like slimness and fatness, sexuality and gender, and social status. In academic institutions, hate can occur among learners, teachers and students, and teachers themselves. Thus, it is worthy of discussing the context of hate recognized or experienced at Rowan University and how the campus can address hate, compassion, and inclusion.

As an academic institution, Rowan University has students and teachers with different social status, attitudes, and race. Therefore, the institution may have a culture of hate to a greater extent based on these attributes. As a member of the Rowan community, I have experienced hate based on sexual orientation. Arthur, not his name, was a member of the transgender community. He faced stigmatization, threats, and abuses from other students. This scenario made him depressed, forcing his parents to take action against students who discriminated against him. I expressed compassion for Arthur since other students felt he was an outcast. People need to realize that being a transgender person is innate and not something acquired through education.

I also experienced a girl named “Tiana” who faced discrimination because of being tall. Other students hated Tiana and could mock and abuse her because of being tall. Her abusers chanted “how’s the heat up there” when they met her. This behavior is uncouth and should not happen since it subjects the individual to harm and psychological torture. No one chooses to be born tall or short, and students should show affection to those who look different from them. I have also experienced racism among students. Some students do not like being together with others possessing a different skin color. Even though racism is not intense at Rowan University, some black students have reported having poor relationships with other white students based on their skin color. It is shameful and disrespectful for students to discriminate against others based on their race since no one chooses to be born in a specific family.

For any institution to effectively address the culture of hate, they need to have courses or organizations to tackle the growing menace. In Rowan University, the organizations that could help address the culture of hate are the Department of Psychology and the Office of the Dean of Students. These organizations could caution students from engaging in discriminatory acts like racism and gender-based hate. They can take drastic actions on students accountable for discriminatory acts to serve as an example to others. The Department of Psychology and the Dean of Students Office can provide counseling sessions to victims of hate to ensure they are psychologically healthy. The Dean of Students Office can also engage with students by holding discussion sessions to address the hate culture at Rowan University.

Rowan University can address compassion and inclusion by implementing clear policies and initiatives concerning the hate culture. Having anti-bias policies will help build a culture of tolerance and reduce hate crimes at Rowan University. Rowan University can work with civil rights organizations to foster anti-bias laws that protect vulnerable individuals such as black students, transgender persons, or hate victims. Rowan University can work together with the Department of Justice in New Jersey to foster anti-discriminatory laws that protect victims of hate. Besides, Rowan University can partner with law enforcement agencies in New Jersey, such as the police department to help handle hate crimes among students and teachers.

Indeed, hate crimes in academic institutions are becoming a menace to both students and teachers, and they need to take drastic measures to avert the problem. Hate crimes such as racism and gender-based discrimination can be effectively addressed by the university using the Department of Psychology and the Office of the Dean of Students. Also, the Department of Justice and law enforcement agencies can help foster anti-discriminatory policies and prevent hate crimes.
