The historical developments that caused the separation of the professions of medicine and nursing were brought about by the conflicting roles between the two professionals. As much as both of them played an important role in the field of medicine, there was supposed to be a distinction between their roles. This was to reduce the conflicts as well as define their roles and responsibilities. According to the historical context, both Nurses and other professionals of medicine carried out similar functions. However, the two professions were trained differently. As such, it brought about the idea of specialisation in which nurses were majorly trained on how to offer aid and physical treatment on the patients. On the other hand, the professional of medicine specialised on providing opinion and diagnosis to facilitate smooth operation of the health sector (Brill, 2015). One of the ways that I could change the boundaries today is to give more roles to the nurses as they also play an important role in the health sector.
Nurses tend to face various challenges which relate to attaining or maintaining an authoritative role in the healthcare system of the future. One of the challenges is the entry of various professions in the field of medicine which can also perform as nurses. As such, it limits the functions of nurses on how to attain authoritative roles. Also, the other medical professions are more empowered compared to nurses as they tend to believe that their roles are of major importance as it relates to diagnosis the patients (Brill, 2015). What such people fail to understand is that their roles would not be significant without the involvement of nurses. The health care system works as a collaborative effort for the benefit of the patients.
