Gee (2017) depicts that the shortage of housing is the reason behind the skyrocketing rent prices in the United States. According to the author, in New York, approximately 62, 000 new housing units were added between 2011 and 2015, which were enough to house about 125, 000 people. The city’s population, however, grew by at least 300,000 people over the same period leading to demand-pull inflation of the rent prices. Gee sought to research and report on the main reason behind the drastic rise in homelessness over the years.
