Often, my father used this statement whenever I attempted to do something and I failed. The statement was meant to encourage me never to give up and that whenever I failed, I should get back up.
I think that the meaning of the statements has not changed. I believe they are still relevant especially with how the society is continuously changing. The expressions can still be used to encourage the children at the present time.
