The movie, Gladiator was set in Roman time covering a story of a once powerful general was forced to become a gladiator. The emperor's son is enraged when his father inherits the throne to his favorite general instead of him. He kills his father and starts killing the general's family. The general is sold into slavery to train as a Gladiator whose popularity in the arena threatens the throne. His paper seeks to compare and contrast the fashion in the film to the actual historical time.
During this time in history, people including the Roman soldiers wore open shoes, though the leather which made women shoes were a bit softer than those of men. In the film Gladiator, people are wearing closed boots (Dyson, 2000). The decade's fashion regarding footwear influences the look in the film whereby the same material (leather) was used in making the boots used in the film. This was to somehow match the fashion of the decade (Ward, 2001).

In regard to dressing, women had three main fashion staples. They included tunica, an under-dress worn under overdress. Ut normally extended to the feet (Scott, 2000). Secondly, the Stola, an overdress worn by both men and women though it was later discarded. Lastly, a Palla which was wrapped around the body and over one shoulder. In the film Gladiator, the same mode of dressing among women is adhered to bringing the actual image of the Roman fashion at the time (RATNAWATI, 2011).
A mong men, toga and tunica were the fashion of the time. Tunica was a simple type of a shirt that was worn under the toga ((Dinnie, 2009). Toga, on the other hand, was an oval-shaped garment wrapped on the body to look smart. This same fashion is observed largely in the film Gladiator. The observance of the fashion in the movie enhances the fashion look of the decade in the Roman time (Vout, 1996).
