I visited the training base for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre which is in New York on 17th of April 2018. The dancers were revising on the dances they had done in the past events. The settings of each dance were created the same way it had been developed in the actual events. The group presented the first dance “Festa Barocca” which was first time presented in the year 2012. “Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre is a modern dance company which is led by artistic director Robert Battle and Masazumi Chaya.” The company has several choreographers who include Kyle Abraham (modern dance) and Aszure Barton among others. The choreographer of this specific dance that they presented as the first was Mauro Bigonzetti who is a popular figure among dance lovers.

The dance came from Italian culture and looking from the attires that the dancers wore; the choreographer tried to bring something different to the audiences. He brought a dance that showed the culture of Italian people and the dancing was also related to how the Italian servants danced to their leaders. The title of the piece is presented in the Italian language which I didn’t obtain its meaning. But according to the dance performance made, I think the title of the song reflected the beauty of the Italian life and the culture of people from that country. Most likely, the song related to those sang to royal families of Italy. The dance also presented the Italian culture through fashion. The dancing attires worn by the dancers showed the beauty of the Italian fashion. Although all the dancers were excellently performing, several stood out. Those that stood out moved with so much ease from one section of the stage to the other, and their faces, figure, and appearance resembled that of most Italians. The background of the stage had no scenery but was dark. This was great creativity simply because the attires that the dancers wore were bright and sparkling. Presenting a dark background and illuminating the stage from the sides and front was awesome. The movements of the dancers were seen. The lighting of the stage was lovely as it lightings emitted rays of different colors that made it hard to know the actual colors of the attires the dancers were in. The background also did fit well with the attires and the movements of the dancers. The background appeared as a cave from where the dancers came out from appearing to the light and going back. This in a way is connected to the ancient Roman movies which are acted in adventurous places and dancing or any celebration is carried out in a field where the background is dark.

The dance on “Festa Barocca” by the Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre reflected the culture of the Italian people. From the instrumentals to the word flow of the song, it depicted the singing styles of the Italian people. The dancers did it amazingly from their fast movement to the last. Their hairstyle also reflected how the ancient Italian people loved to keep their hair. Also, the dancers who possessed bright complexion were made to appear to have possessed a different skin color by the lightings of the stage. This made the dancers look like the ancient Romans who had a chocolate complexion. Their movements also resembled those of the Roman dancers. The combination of the lighting system, dancers’ movements, and the background brought life in their performance. This is the kind of dance I would suggest everyone watch as it was an exceptional performance full of creativity and power.
