How I visited virtual museum: "Game of Hounds and Jackals", "Mount for Spear Shaft", "Plaque with Saint John the Evangelist" and others

Game of Hounds and Jackals is the name of the art. The board is given support by four strong bull's legs. One is partial while another one is completely restored. The playing pieces are stored in a draw with a bolt. There are five pins jackal’s head and five with hound’s head. “The board is shaped like an axe-blade, and there are 58 holes in the upper surface with an incised palm tree topped by an ashen sign in the centre" "Presuming the 'Shen' sign ... to be the goal, we find on either side twenty-nine holes, or including the goal, thirty aside. Among these holes, on either side, two are marked...never, 'good;' and four others are linked together by curved lines... Assuming that the holes marked 'good' incur a gain, it would appear that the others, connected by lines, suffer a loss. Now the moves themselves could easily have been denoted by the chance cast of knuckle-bones or dice and if so we have before us a simple, but exciting, game of chance." The intricate voyage was likened by the ancient Egyptians through the underworld to a game. This is the sole reason why the gaming board and the gaming piece are right objects to deposit in tombs.

Howard Carter excavated this game art, and he was helped closely by Lord Carnarvon.

Carnarvon Collection purchased by the Museum from Lady Carnarvon, 1926 (26.7.1287a–k). Remained in the Carnarvon family until given to the Museum by the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, 2012 (2012.508)”

This was a unique type of game, and that is why I was attracted to it. 

Rhyton terminating in the forepart of a wild cat is the name of this art. This is a combination of the drinking vessels resembling an animal head (wildcat), elaborated bowl and the Rhytons vessels with a hole at the top from which liquid flow. This was a highly valued vassal in the Eastern society. This type of vessels made from gold, clay, silver and much more was extensively used during pre-Achaemenid, Parthian and the Achaemenid. It was used mostly in the West and Eastern Iran. There were many animals which were included in the head of the Vessels were variety. They included horse, ram, Ibex and Bull. Other was supernatural creatures; others had royal inscriptions and many others. "Rhytons made of precious materials were probably luxury wares used at royal courts. The Greek world adopted both the rhyton and the animal-headed vessel as exotic and prestigious Oriental products." "The horn-shaped vessel ends in the forepart of a panther; a spout for pouring is in the middle of the chest. A gilded fruit-laden grapevine winds around the panther's chest; at the other end of the rhyton, an ivy wreath encircles the rim."

The real artist is not documented; however, it was purchased from Manouchehr Malekzadehmokri by the Museum. 

The Metalwork-Vessels is art which originates from Iran. It was acquired in the year 1979 by the Museum from the Manouchehr Malekzadehmokri, Isak Antiques in the USA. 

The Accession number for the metalwork- vessels is 1979.447 in the museum. 

The beauty and Uniqueness of the metalwork-vessels were enough to attract me. 

Terracotta amphora (jar) is the name of this art. On its body are Herakles, Apollo and Obverse all struggling to a possession of the Delphic Tripod. This was the centre of the Apollo oracle; Dionysos, reverse, the god of wine, between maenad and satyr. On the lip are reverse and obverse, Nemean lion and Herakles. It has a red-figure technique which has a story traced to the workshop of the Andokides. The red figure is notably different from the black figure regarding drawing in many different terms not only drawing. It is a different appointment on the unglazed and glazed surface of the vase. It seems that the potter was the one responsible for the surface preparation, this, therefore, means that the technique used is different from that of the painter. “The scene on the obverse depicts the hero Herakles with his club and the god Apollo with bow and arrows, struggling over the Delphic tripod, which Herakles sought to carry off.”

The beauty of the artwork made me liked it. Also, the uniqueness of this work, as well as its cultural background or history, attracted. 

The art is called the relief panel. It is a relief from the King Assyrian Shurnasirpal which depicts the king himself and an attendant. The two figures which are extremely large than the sized figure are curved on a low relief, “and as with other reliefs in the palace featuring the image of the king, the carving is particularly fine and shows special attention to detail.” The second relief is joined by the panel “that shows a further attendant, also facing the king, and a winged supernatural protective figure.” Together, the two major panels show the human courtiers flanking the king. This is also seen in other scenes where he or the Assyrian Sacred Tree is flanked by an eagle and human-headed guardian figure. The King himself is easily identified "by the by his crown, a distinctive truncated cone with a smaller cone emerging from the centre, with a long ‘streamer' hanging from its back." his luxuriant beard and the clothing also distinguish him from the servant. Close examination of the rat is the beadles and figure probably a eunuch. 

This art is classified as the Stone-Reliefs-Inscribed 

The materials are inclusive of the stone, Alabaster, Gypsum, Sculpture, relief and the panels.

This is art originates from the Mesopotamia Nimrud. 

Sir Austen Henry Layard was the artist that excavated this art in the year 1840s.

This technique attracted my attention due to its rich historical background. Moreover, it is a representation of aver unique and quality artwork in the media art.

Mount for Spear Shaft is the name of this art. Those people leaving beyond the borders of the Romans were being referred to as Barbarians by the Romans, and the Romans were employing them as the mercenary soldier, their primary purpose was to safeguard empire borders. This "object—one of a set of three mounts for spear shafts and a belt buckle—was found in the grave of a barbarian warrior stationed in the Roman province of Gaul.” The object part of the spear shaft has a shield apart which is in the arms view and the armour galleries. "The six-pointed interlaced star, so prominent on this mount, was not at this time a Jewish symbol; it appears as a decorative motif in both Roman and Germanic art." the object also have patterns of scrolls, fantastic animals and the rosettes. This artwork is classified under the Metalwork-Silver.

The artwork was created by Pierpont Morgan in the years 1917. 

The artwork was "Found in Vermand, northern France.; Albert Jumel, Amiens; Stanislas Baron, Paris; J. Pierpont Morgan, London and New York (until 1917)." it is located Roman empire and depicted the culture o the roman.

The beauty and the rich cultural background story of the artwork attracted my attention. 

Plaque with Saint John the Evangelist is the name of this artwork. This artwork depicts an evangelist. A close look at the artwork also reveals that the evangelist is accompanied the eagle symbol, his symbol, and his gospel text I also displayed. "The deep layering of his tunic folds adds life and vigour to the Classical drapery forms. The roughly lettered inscription on the upper border added at an early date, translates", "The word of John soars to heaven like an eagle." At first, this artist plaque was thought to be extracted from a cover of the certain book. However, this thought was objected as “now argued that this panel and three more, which represent the other authors of the Gospels, formed the wings of a triptych flanking an image of Christ in the central panel.” 

This artwork falls under Ivories regarding its classification. 

Multiple materials are used to make his artwork. These are inclusive of the bone, ivory, and lastly plaques. 

The art was created in the early 19 th centuries. It dominated in the error of the A.D 500 -1000. 

The artist identification is not that clear as it is not documented on the website of the museum. 

This is art depicted Carolingian culture. This art was made in Aachen Germany. Its geographical location is Aachen, Europe and specifically in Germany. 

To locate this art in the museum, he/she has to use the accession number 1977.421 

I chose this artwork because it depicted religion. I also was impressed by its uniqueness and lastly its beauty. 

Part two The artists come up with different work which depicts events, notion or perception on their time. This artwork also represents the culture of a specific type of community or the society at that time. However, as the season rolls on, this perception or events changes and people start looking at them at different angles. For instance, the perception of various items, culture or the events as represented by the six different types of artworks given above has changed. However, some have also remained same and are practiced even currently. Game of Hounds and Jackals which dominated the ancient Egypt was a gem which was also played by the royal families of pharaohs. It created a culture of entertainment and relaxation among the royal family. However, this perception has so far changed a lot. Currently, people are advised to find some time off work and relax their mind. It is much different from the ancient Egypt where people used not to get time for work as this was termed as laziness ( Crist et al., 2016). Currently, this is one of the games which people used to relax their mind and relieve stress. Now, they have changed to different forms such as casino, dice and much more. 

The Greeks had many cultures which guided them. One of the most prominent religions which people is they like prestigious kind of items. For instance, the rich in this land had many things made of gold and silver to show the type of wealth they have accumulated. These were demonstrated by the bowls and drinking vessels which were made from gold and silver. It is a thirds time that vessels built from the depiction of head of animals such as the wildcat was made. Little has changed for such cultures as the wealthy individuals still use many of such vessels in the Greek and the world. However, one difference is that at that time, many such prestigious items were less among the common people; this has yet changed substantially as they are currently owned by quite a considerable part of the populace. The human being still values beauty now. This has not changed a lot. However, it is the kind of designs that have changed. Beautiful items such as Terracotta amphora (jar) are still valued. Moreover, they are always valued as one of the best symbol Greek in the entire Europe. 

Respect for loyalty is maters of impotence. It is still a culture even now that their subject respects the King of the President. This has not changed as depicted in the artwork of the relief panel. The perception of the respect to the authority has changed but not much. Currently, the slight difference is that people have become more aware of their rights and perception of the Kingship or leadership position has changed. People now view their leaders as their servants whom they have the power to put in the position of leadership or remove them from that position. Much has not changed in the Roman culture and items such as Mount for Spear Shaft is still valued and is used as rich historical items for the country. What has changed substantially is the perception of war and conflict resolutions. Currently, the peace is enhanced within the borderlines and Mount for Spear Shaft is treated as historical symbols, not as fighting instruments. People currently have a different perception of religion. Many people now believe in religion. However, others have changed and view religion as just a symbol which people use when they are desperate. However such art as Plaque with Saint John the Evangelist is still valued.
