One of the key structural trends that have been most influential in shaping my life has been the change in social life. Traditionally, social circles, relations, and operations were formed according to geographic location contrasting the contemporary culture where, although social circles are still made of friends and family, the number of connections a person has increased according to their interests. This has allowed increased differentiation and specialization in social life.
Currently, the internet has allowed social circles to be increased through a variety of avenues. Targeted marketing when coupled with individual goals and preferences has meant that people interact and forge relationships with a variety of people, even without the parties having a physical relationship or interaction. The internet allows people to link based on interests like gaming, cooking, education, or research where people share information and increase their social circles with minimal or no information of the others. This was unheard of in previous times. Traditionally, information was mainly relayed through print media which meant that its spread was mainly limited to a specific area or the amount of material with information. However, the presence of TV and the internet has allowed information to timeless and infinite, to the interested parties.

This has meant that a person can choose to not only ignore information readily available in their vicinity that they find irrelevant, but they can also access information across a global scale but only that which they deem important. It is easier for me to find about recent trends in social life due to an increased social circle and specialization, information that would have previously been accessed exclusively through seminars or workshops. However, this means that I might be ignorant of other matters that surround me and that, in person, I might have much less in common with others and can afford to feel unaffected by this.
