The class has been excellent and has positively impacted me through achieving the objectives intended for the subject. All the essays and films presented in class were interesting. I liked all the films that were shown in class and would like to suggest films such as “Namesake” by Jhumpa Lahiri among others presented in the future. The lessons learned from the semester has remarkably impacted my views and ideas regarding films and performances. Firstly, from the movie of The Heiress, the story assists students to understand the transformation that has occurred regarding women maltreatment up to date. The film was set back in the 1840s, a time when women in the society neither received attention and nor acknowledgment, as compared to the freedom and recognition that women of the modern world enjoy.
As demonstrated by the character Olivia de Havilland, playing the part of Catherine Sloper, who throughout the film, tried to dedicate her life to win her father’s love and affection, but all her efforts were in vain. Her father never approved her marriage proposals for all the men who came to seek for her hand in marriage. Catherine Sloper, in spite of her beauty in real life, is portrayed in the film as a woman who suffered mistreatment from her father, as showed by her tones and body language. Besides her father’s oppression, the society too never gave her the attention she needed. Later, her transformation is evident after her father’s death. She learned to be confident and bold from the experience of life she had when her father was still alive. Thus, the film tries to take me back to imagine, understand and compare how women oppression has evolved to equal treatment of men and women in the modern world.

Additionally, the films and performances have assisted me to learn the significance of disguising one’s character in real life, to teach the importance of virtues such as kindness and love among families, friends, and community as a whole. From the essay of character analysis, Patsey, a character in the film 12 years a slave, is a courageous woman abducted to slavery but could not be damaged by the severe experiences of her slavery life. She fought hard never to be separated from her family of boys when she was captured into slavery, a performance that depicts how mindful and passionate she was about his family. Moreover, the film taught me that resilience that we show even in situations we perceive to be difficult could make us emerge victoriously. For instance, Patsey, in the movie 12 years of slavery, portrays a resilience character by picking more cotton than other slaves, a situation that made her get the name as the queen of the field.
However, when comparing Patsey’s character with Amy’s a character in the film of Gone Girl, Amy is not kind and is a self-centered woman who killed Desi, a friend who offered a place to stay when she was discovered to be alive, all in an attempt to get Nick back. Nick was Amy’s husband and when Amy got tired of the marriage, she went back to her father’s home and pretended to be dead. Nick was the suspect according to the evidence Amy strategically placed in their home, and found by the detectives who were investigating his death. Upon listening to Nick pleading innocent on the television, Amy was moved and after she was discovered to be alive, she moved to Desi. She killed Desi, an innocent who offered her help, in trying to defend herself from being raped by Desi to get Nick back. Therefore, from the film, we learn lessons that we should not destroy others especially the innocents in trying to pursue our selfish interests.
