The authors of this research state that police feel respected and there is a growing need for police to understand the community they are serving. By doing so, they are better placed to perform an effective job. Majority of the police in the survey have attested to the fact that they share values with some of the residents in the community they serve. Ethnicity and race of police is also seen by the community as a hindrance to their performance. The other issue that the survey touches on is on the division present between police over the use of aggressive and physical tactics in their communities. The report also states of how majority of police officers have become more callous when it comes to serving their communities. The callousness in question is linked to the support given to police aggressiveness and physical tactics adopted in enforcing the law in communities. It is such information that brings to light the importance of police having relationships with the communities they serve in order to provide them with the needed security services.

policing and police legitimacy. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

The authors have managed to bring out the current issue of police violence against civilians that has drawn worldwide attention. The intervention mentioned in this article is community-oriented policing (COP) that builds on the public’s trust and the enhancement of police legitimacy. Evidence shows how COP has led to change in attitudes towards the police task force. In the end, police departments benefit as positive police-public interaction is promoted, which translates down to effective and just policing. Non-enforcement interactions suggested are community meetings and neighborhood watch programs that will enable police organizations to function successfully.

The Department of Justice looks into the importance of police-community relationships by stating how helpful they are in maintaining the safety of the public. Furthermore, policing becomes an effective profession. Therefore, the report outlines recommendations that can build such relations. Discussing and acknowledging the challenges that police face is vital. It is through the cooperation with community members’ that crime information can be accessed easily. In the event, working with the police in devising solutions becomes easier. For these relationships to work, transparency and accountability needs to be promoted. Thirdly, steps need to be undertaken to reduce bias and improve cultural competency, which is essential when rendering useful and culturally responsive services to communities that are ethnically and culturally diverse. Fourthly, focus needs to be maintained to show the importance of collaboration as knowing the community residents helps both the police and community. As such, personal barriers will be broken and stereotypes will be overcome. Lastly, these relationships will promote internal diversity and growth opportunities are ensured in the policing profession.

Summary

From the above, it is evident that police and the community they serve need to have a relationship in order to provide them with a safe neighborhood. Moreover, the scholarly resources found have looked into police-community relationships and how important they are when it comes to maintaining law and order in the communities they serve. Police and communities need to have a relationship as it translates down to the building of trust and harmony.
