What I resonated with and made me think deeper about racism is its definition as a system of unequal power or a system of inequality as opposed to individual prejudice and discrimination. This makes a lot of sense especially in the sociology perspective that is only interested in the evaluation of human behavior and what impacts it. Dr. DiAngelo points out that prior to the civil rights movement having different races and being of a distinct race was a celebrated attribute of culture and identity. People proudly accepted and boasted of different racial qualities that made them unique and had real impacts in the way they live their lives and form relationships. This opened my eyes to the fact that racism isn’t always a bad thing as its mentioning in contemporary society would have one think, rather, it is also an acknowledgement of individual differences which exist and are distinct among races on a natural rather than prejudicial level.
Overtime however social amenities, government and leadership systems have been developed on the basis of race with the clear objective to benefit one race and adversely affect the other, these systems of inequality based on race have morphed overtime to impact widespread and significant problems and issues among given (minority) races making racism more of a moral issue. Dr. DiAngelo points out that after the development of the civil rights movements, racism became a moral issue associated with prejudice and discrimination and made it difficult, almost impossible for anyone to express themselves and their identity in a racial aspect or capacity. This has in essence stripped both white and black people of a way to life (culture)and expression and has forever changed the meaning of racism as well as what it could be as a tool for socialization among people of similar and different racial backgrounds across the world.
