What did you learn this week or what insights do you have about this week?

In this week, i learned how to work with clients who demonstrate problematic behaviour. Some clients can be difficult to deal with. Helpers need to have the skills to handle such clients by making them less troublesome. Clients who exhibit problematic behaviour need to be handles with high understanding and respect.

Part B

Identify common self-doubts and fears of helpers.

Helpers are confronted with some common self doubts and fears. They include perfectionist strivings, personal concerns and bring up fears. The anxiety originates from questions such as the type of clients they will encounter in their helping course and how best they can help the clients. However, anxiety is perceived as a normal reaction when faced with a situation that is threatening in nature. Increased anxiety hinders helpers from listening and understanding what the clients say (Corey & Corey, 2020) . It is essential that helpers develop strategies to help themselves to overcome anxiety and fears. Another cause for worry and concern among helpers is the desire to be perfect in helping clients.

Describe common forms of resistance or reluctance

Clients tend to exhibit diverse forms of resistance and reluctance towards helpers and counseling process. The reluctance and resistance emanate from the client’s childhood experiences. Some clients would not trust helpers but would instead develop negative feelings ad reactions towards them. Some clients tend to perceive helpers as idealized parents. In such cases, clients who experienced abandonment in their early years of growth and development are more likely to become resistant to helpers. The other form of resistance is political transference. Some clients perceive helpers as part of the system that has offended them leading to resistance towards them (Corey & Corey, 2020) . Other forms of resistance from clients include clients who fall in love with helpers. In such instances, clients tend to perceive being in a relationship with the helpers would help to solve their problems. Some clients also tend to make many unrealistic demands on their helpers. Such demands comprise of resistance and reluctance to counseling process.

Define the following terms: Parallel process, and Passive-aggressive behavior.

During the counseling process, helpers need to shelf their reactions and deal with them latter by making use of their own therapy. This is referred to as the parallel process which has positive impacts on both the client and the helper. The passive aggressive behaviour on the other hand refers to the action of clients to defend themselves from being hurt through dealing indirectly with people. Their avoiding behaviour is noted through sarcasm and hostility such clients are likely to arrive late for counseling sessions.
