I have read about the issues of African-Americans, and it breaks my heart. It is more disheartening to know that a lot of racial discrimination takes place in learning institutions. Sometimes I sit back and think why we have people who face so many challenges because of few individuals who do not want change. The constitution gives every one of us their fundamental rights and liberty to live where they want, do what they want, integrate and belong to the society so long as they do not affect anyone else. Much has been said and a lot done to foster unity, liberty, and equity, but there seems to be a broken line somewhere. It could be our education system, our culture or stereotypes that are causing all these and we need a quick, lasting solution.
Hellen Keller once said that the highest result of education is tolerance. As people who have acquired an education and a nation that ranks among the top regarding education, we need better. I still have not come to terms with the deep-rooted issue of discrimination against the African Americans. If indeed education enhances tolerance, we need to see a lot more relief for the racial minorities in learning institutions. The laws are there, and schools have implemented most of them, but the society is still discriminative. Civil liberties come with prices, and we need to pay them. Many people suffered fighting for the rights of the African-Americans, and we should not live to see their efforts unrewarded. As a nation, a community that boasts significant diversity, we need to embrace one another irrespective of their background. In the spirit of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, we need to love each other more regardless of their race, skin color, religion, and nation of origin.
