Competency models help nurses to gain the required skills, knowledge and competencies required to thrive in the difficult and demanding environment. One such model is the education competency model. The model recognizes the fact that nurses need a wide array of competencies due to the complex nature of the profession. The model is based on five principles which include competency is essential for quality care and safety, nurses should use their skills to help patients and communities, demonstrate sound judgement, develop professional identity continuously and have a spirit of inquiry. The model is relevant in the current nursing trends where patient centered care is becoming more popular ( Education Competency Model Update, n.d ). Nurses need to have the skills and competencies required to handle the pressure and make crucial decisions when providing care. These pillars require nurses to carry 0tu self-reflection to determine if they have the right skills and identify a strategy of improving in areas where they show some inconsistencies.
The best strategy to learn the required competencies is through practice. This requires applying theoretical knowledge in real life situation on a daily basis. For example, I will develop my analytical abilities by focusing on my problem solving skills. Nurses have to identify the cause-effect in different situations in order to be effective ( Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing n.d). Psycho-social abilities are also crucial for nursing students. Since nursing is a stressful occupation and the environment is demanding, nursing students must be able to handle the pressure by ensuring that they are sensitive and civil in their interactions. Learning this competency requires a nursing student to always treat people with respect and courtesy despite the events leading to the interaction. It also includes communicating verbally and non-verbally in both informal and formal setting ( Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing n.d). Effective communication needs a nursing student to be culturally competent. Recognizing the significance of the social, cultural, and professional background. Finally, I will build my physical abilities by participating in physical exercises frequently. I will also participate in activities such as yoga to ensure that I am physically and mentally ready for the stresses of nursing.

Since building competencies is an important part of learning, self-reflection is imperative. It is important for a nursing student to be aware of the skills he or she possesses versus those that need to be developed. This is only possible if a person looks introspectively at their skills and capabilities. In addition, constructive criticism has the potential of improving a person to be better personally and professionally.
However, professional development, particularly in nursing is not smooth. Nursing students have to contend with various barriers. One of the barriers is lack of rime. Nursing is a demanding course. Therefore, it is difficult to find sufficient time to do everything. As a result, nurses are forced to prioritize, meaning that some aspects of learning might suffer. Another barrier is communication. Social media has taken over communication in the modern times. Verbal communication and basic socialization is different for the current generation. Since nursing needs competencies such as cultural competency and emotional intelligence, social media is a barrier for young and upcoming nurses. The finally barrier that might curtail professional development is lack of experience with people from different cultures. Nursing requires understanding of the needs of the community being served, regardless of their culture. Gaining cultural competence requires experiences, something that most nurses have to learn while on the job.
