In my assessment modification assignment, I reviewed an assessment from my grade one class. The assessment was from an English class whereby students were supposed to read a comprehension, identify vocabularies, and pronounce certain words appropriately. I read a story from an English textbook and asked the learners to read the story on their own. The students were required to come up with vocabulary after reading comprehension. Also, they were supposed to narrate what they had learned to allow the teacher to examine their proficiency in reading and pronunciation.
The story that the students read for the class was a fairy tale narrative Cinderella (Disney Princess, 2020) . The story entailed words such as the prince, palace, fairy godmother, magic, and stepmother. The teacher had written the words on the board and explained to the students what they meant. The students were also supposed to identify these words from the story and explain what their meanings were. The learners were required to state why the palace was different from other houses. They were also needed to state the people that lived in the castle. The learners were required to explain the role of the fairy godmother in the story; this included stating whether she was a god creature or an evil one. Some students found it easy to read the story on their own, whereas others had difficulties pronouncing certain words.

The ENL students had no problems pronouncing the vocabularies from the text. The ELL students had problems reading specific words. Pronouncing words such as prince and princess was confusing to non-native English speakers since when they were supposed to pronounce the word princess or prince, they would say "princesa" and "prinicipe"; these are Spanish words. This pronunciation depicted that their first language had an immense influence on their learning.
Most of the ELL learners in the class were at the beginner level; they were able to use and understand single English words. The students could also memorize simple written sentences and used common vocabulary (Babinski et al., 2017). Since they had little knowledge about English, I would modify the lesson by including word pictures, for example, drawing a princess and naming it in English. I would also incorporate audios in class to ensure that students have heard how certain vocabularies are pronounced. Also, I will speak slowly to ensure that the students listen to how I articulated words. Groupings will also be appropriate, for it will allow the students to get hands-on experience in class. I would also include rote learning since repetition of certain aspects helps a student to remember what they have learned.

RE: TEACHING ENGLISH TO ELL STUDENTS
In my experience of teaching, I have discovered that teaching requires a teacher to be adaptable. A teacher comes across students from all walks of life, and it is their responsibility to ensure that the needs of these students are met. In my practicum have I met students who have different needs; some cannot speaking English well, whereas others are eloquent in the same language. It is, therefore, important for teachers to ensure that they inculcate proper assessment mechanisms in their teaching.
Learners do not only need to read and write, especially in English classes; they also need phonemic awareness; this involves the identification of sound in a word and being able to differentiate the sound from others. A teacher can achieve this through a proper examination of a learner; this includes examining their strengths and weakness. Visual images should be included in the process since it is easier for an ELL learner to learn words by looking at the pictures of objects mentioned. Audios are also important; learners for they will help learners to understand how the word can be pronounced appropriately other tan struggling to create sounds on their won.
Including visuals, audios, and creating phonemic awareness is essential since they help a learner learn English fast. The school administration should include these aspects of teaching, for they have proved to be effective. Yours faithfully
