Daniel Pink explains how science has been used to motivate people in the business world. Human beings get motivation from different types of factors; biological motivation is one in which our biological needs motivate us to do something. For example, when you are hungry, you get motivated to eat and when thirsty you drink water. Another form of motivation includes worry of being punished, which makes one do anything possible to avoid being punished. We also have other forms of motivation in which we do something because we are interested or because it is fun and make a significant contribution to our endeavors. Pink explains how companies are more interested in extrinsic motivations, behaviors that are driven by external factors such as money, fame, and grades. Extrinsic motivations work better since they employees can see instant reward after doing something. The employee needs to be paid well if at all an organization want good results and improve efficiency.
Workers are truly motivated by autonomy, mastery (feeling of making progress), and purpose (doing things that matters). Many managers believe that when people are left alone, they become less productive and would shift their focus from the assigned work. Managers then tend to be very strict and heavily supervise the employees. However, Pink says that this is one of the ways to make people less motivated. He suggests that when employees are left on their own or under minimal supervision, they become their own manager and are motivated to be innovative and to think freely. Many great ideas do not get realized due to the strict supervisions that some managers enforce on their employees. Giving your employees some space motivates them even to love their job since they feel free to work and not commanded.
