The article reviews the reduction of cardiovascular diseases among African Americans and whites. There has been a burden on the risk factors of cardiovascular diseases such as obesity and this has interfered with the reduction of CVD. Concentrations of Sphingolipids and ceramides have been associated with causing CVD among African Americans. The researchers in a quest to determine whether the differential concentration of Sphingolipids and Ceramides caused undertook a study to examine these concentrations in the plasma of the whites and African Americans. Using HPLC the concentration of Sphingolipids and ceramides was determined for individuals who had a metabolic disorder and those who didn’t have a disorder. The results from the research indicated that the concentration of ceramide in African Americans with the metabolic disorder was distinct. The researchers thus concluded that further research needs to be done so as to determine whether the sphingolipid concentration disparity among the whites and the African Americans has any impact on the therapeutic approach for cardiovascular diseases.

Jones, M. M., & Saines, M. (2019). The Eighteen of 1918–1919: Black Nurses and the Great Flu Pandemic in the United States. American journal of public health
, (0), e1-e8.
The article probes the role played by Black American nurses from 1918-1919 when there was an influenza outbreak after the world war. The influenza outbreak took the lives of 50million people in the world and approximately 675000 in the United States. The pandemic occurred during a time when there was acute racial segregation and violence in the United States. During this period in time, the black Americans were barred from accessing public institutions such as schools and hospitals. Black leaders organized a campaign which was unsuccessful and was geared at ensuring the black nurses get the opportunity to work with the Red Cross and the army. The campaign provided an opportunity for 18 black nurses to work with Amy during this period. The article thus provides insight into the issue of civil rights, especially among black nurses. The article thus puts across a study that emphasizes that pandemics open opportunities for equity in the health sector.
Sadler, E., Potterton, V., Anderson, R., Khadjesari, Z., Sheehan, K., Butt, F., ... & Sandall, J. (2019). Service user, carer and provider perspectives on integrated care for older people with frailty, and factors perceived to facilitate and hinder implementation: A systematic review and narrative synthesis. PloS one , 14 (5), e0216488.
The article reviews integrated care offered to older individuals in society. According to the authors, older people with frailty care tend to receive care that is of low quality and this thus makes this group of individuals a target for integrated care. The researchers in the study carried out a review to look into reviews that explore service care providers as well as integrated care for older individuals with frailty. The study aimed at reviewing policies and factors that hinder the implementation of integrated care. The data for the review was obtained from MEDLINE, CINAHAL, and social sciences citations. The study revealed that it is important to facilitate and address organizational and systemic components for integrated care among older individuals with frailty. Therefore greater attention needs to be drawn to the older individuals to ensure they receive quality care.
Yu, T. H., Chou, Y. Y., & Tung, Y. C. (2019). Should we pay attention to the surgeon or hospital volume in total knee arthroplasty? Evidence from a nationwide population-based study. PloS one , 14 (5), e0216667.
The article reviews a study that was carried out to determine the relationship between surgeons and the threshold of hospital volume. Prior research on this subject has been carried and the results indicated a nonlinear relationship between the two variables. The previous studies also indicated that the optimum hospital volume should be specified. The current study by Chou and Tung adopted a nationwide retrospective study. The study involved a total of 30828 patients who had received surgery from a total of 437 hospitals. The results obtained from the study indicated that the optimum threshold for the hospitals was 50 cases in a year while that of surgeons was 75 cases in a year. 30 days readmission was only associated with the surgeon's threshold volume.
The article provides insight and accurate evidence that I can use for my project.
