During the start of my 6th grade year, I set an academic goal to score an A grade in all my subjects during the final year assessment. Unfortunately, I missed my target by two subjects that I scored a B. During my 7th year grade, I again set a goal to score an A in all my subjects during the final year assessment. When the 7th grade final results were released, I had achieved my goal. I had scored an A grade in every subject. During my 6th year grade, I failed to achieve my academic because i spent most of my free time watching movies and playing soccer instead of studying. During my 7th year grade, I was able to achieve my academic goal because I utilized every free time well by studying and preparing for exam. Effective goal-setting takes into account time saving and proper utilization of free time.
Effective goal-setting creates discipline within oneself, in that one can effectively control how he or she spends time. A student who has the quality of effective goal-setting will know when to study and when to play. As a result of good time management, good performance and grades are realized. Good goals possess six characteristics (Anderson, 2006). A good goal(s) should be challenging of one’s time management, should be attainable, should be specific, should be time-limited, should be positive and should be flexible. A goal which possesses these six characteristics is easily achievable during the first attempt and if it’s not achieved, then a second attempt easily yields positive results. My short-term goal is to be the best student in my class this term. My mid-term goal is to get a distinction at the end of my course or education. My long-term goal is use the knowledge I gain from my higher education to positively impact lives of many Americans in the future.
