A student’s performance in an exam or a test is contributed by a myriad of factors. Although a student’s ability to read and understand concepts though in class, concentrate for long study hours, and answer questions exhaustively are factors that could foster the attainment of a better grade, it is undoubtable that the conciseness of open ended questions matter. In the assignment, I was asked to write a story. Despite the fact that ideas in the story were well articulated and coherent, my instructor stated that run-on sentences, comma splices, and wrong sentence structure contributed to my low grade. It is, therefore, evident that when good ideas are not presented correctly, readability is affected compelling an instructor to award a relatively low mark.

I received a pass for the test since ideas demonstrated critical thinking and an understanding of concepts thought in class. Given that this is an English class, my diction, sentence structure, and punctuation mistakes were intolerable. Hence, the low mark. However, had I been more keen to makes sure the sentence structures are correct and all punctuation mistakes are rectified, my submission would have been impressive owing to improvement in readability, coherency, and the ease by which an audience can follow the story. In this regard, it is important that I take the instructors comments into consideration so that I can score a higher marks in future quizzes and exams.

As aforementioned, the low grade attained in the test was caused by mechanical mistakes or flawed sentence structures, wrong usage of comas, and run-on sentences. Sentences are a collection of words assembled to convey a particular meaning. Hence, inclusion or omission of a wrong word in the sentence can result in ambiguity and lack of clarity in one’s writing. In this regard, it is essential that I revisit lessons both from this class and prerequisite English lessons. My focus will be to improve my knowledge on conjunctions, verbs, subject verb agreements, and tenses. Also, the other concern raised by my professor is the presence of run-on sentences in my writing. Run-on sentences are sentences that consist different idea but written adjacently without the right transition or a conjunction. Conjunction, also called joining words are important in writing since they allow ideas to be assembled. On the other hand, transition words promote coherence by ensuring smooth transitioning from one idea to the other. In this regard, improving my knowledge on this two writing skills will allow me to write readable and understandable stories. The third areas is the wrong usage of commas. Commas are punctuations used to divide items in a list, to separate ideas, and when introducing a sentence using a transition word. Learning to use commas appropriately will markedly revamp the quality of my writing. All in all, the three reasons mentioned above cause the attainment of a relatively lower grade.

In view of my results, the cause was the improper use of conjunctions and transition words resulting in run-on sentences, mistakes in regards to sentence structures, and wrong usage of commas. The effect of the three grammar errors was a low score in my essay writing. It is crucial that I improve in this three areas to write better and attain better grades in future. Furthermore, it is vital that I indulge in extensive reading of articles and literature with the aim of learning how sentences are structure, ideas are portrayed, and the various uses of commas. Although I scored lowly in the story exercise, I am certain that with the right input and effort, I will be able to markedly improve my scores.
